Jason Hirata was born in Seattle and earned bachelors degrees in Comparative History of Ideas and Photography from the University of Washington. He was the 2014/15 SUVAIR and the recipient of the 2015 Brink Award. He currently lives and works in New York and is a member of Tarl.


Artist Statement:
"I often see lock boxes like this outside art galleries and vacant real estate. Provided a user knows the passcode, it provides them access to a minuscule common space large enough accommodate a means to further access: a physical key, usually. Inside this lockbox is a ticket stub from a recent visit to SAM I made with my parents. I hate paying for access to anything; in some foolish way this is my attempt at claiming my visit to the SAM as a speculative investment not related to that of an investor at an open house or a software designer at a conference. An eye for an eye, it will never get me anywhere, yet I still hate paying to go to the museum…"
